UPC
Universal Product Code

Introduction: The Barcode of Music from Production to Shelf

The UPC (Universal Product Code) is an international standard commercial barcode that identifies a digital or physical music product (Single, EP, Album) in its entirety. While the ISRC identifies each individual “song recording,” the UPC identifies the “package” containing those recordings. Digital Service Providers (DSPs) require a valid UPC to accept a release into their system as a commercial unit.

Technical Anatomy of the UPC

Two main barcode standards are used in global music distribution:

  • UPC-A (12 Digits): The standard primarily used in North America-based systems.

  • EAN-13 (13 Digits): A broader standard used in Europe and the rest of the world, which encompasses the UPC-A format.

The structure of the barcode includes:

  • Manufacturer/Publisher Prefix: A unique number assigned to our company or the rights holder.

  • Product Number: A specific sequence number assigned to each published album or single.

  • Check Digit: The final digit, generated by a mathematical algorithm, used to verify the code’s accuracy.

Strategic Distinction: The Relationship Between ISRC and UPC

Understanding how these two concepts interact is critical for analyzing your revenue reporting:

  • Hierarchy: The UPC is the “parent” category of the ISRC. A single UPC can contain multiple ISRC codes (the Album scenario).

  • Example: When you release a 10-track album, you will have 10 individual ISRC codes (one for each song). However, there will be only 1 UPC code for the “Album” product that holds those 10 tracks together.

  • Single Release: If you are releasing only one song, it receives both codes because it is simultaneously a “recording” (ISRC) and a “sold product” (UPC).

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

  • Do I need to obtain a UPC code myself? No. For every release made through our company, an internationally valid UPC code is allocated to you free of charge.

  • Can I use my own UPC code if I have one? Yes. You can enter your existing barcodes into the system by selecting the “I have my own UPC code” option on our panel.

  • Is the same UPC used for physical CDs/Vinyl? Technically yes; however, it is a professional preference to assign a different UPC/EAN to physical pressings to track digital and physical sales separately.
